LET’S CHAT SCRAP

Two-inch Scrap Canes
What do I consider to be scrap canes? Well, most scrap canes are either the very beginning or toward the very end of the pull where designs are not fully formed or have started to fade away. They might also be test pulls of designs that were not quite what I was hoping for 🤣, canes that might be lovely but have exterior and/or interior blemishes, inclusions or chips, and a few (very few) may have a tiny hole in the center. Scrap canes consist of transparent and opal COE 96 fusible glass. Oceanside fusible glass makes up 99% of the scrap, however some pinks and deep purple canes may have Youghiogheny COE96 in them. An average pound bag will have approximately 90-100 canes in it.

Fun facts about the 2” Scrap canes:

In the past, my sweet Dad would spend his summer chopping the scrap canes on his back porch. This year he was unable to do this for us, so my sister, Amanda, stepped in. She is an excellent chopper, so in her spare time this summer she snipped all the long canes down into two inch pieces.

Next, my sweet friend Tricia bagged them up! Her husband, Kevin, is a fabulous woodworker and he made this “loader” for her. She sorts through the pieces to get a good variety, then bags and weighs them. Tricia has been doing the Scrap Sale with me from the start, so she’s a pro.

Bits and Butts
Next are the Bits and Butts. After the canes from a pull are sorted, I put scrap canes into a tub for Amanda and the good canes go to Lisa for chopping. Lisa will start by snipping off the pinched ends (which are a large part of what makes up the Bits and Butts). Then at the end of the cane, there is usually an inch or so left over. Lisa sorts these into either the “Goodie Bag” tub, or the Bits and Butts tub. Besides pinched ends, these little scrap pieces will also consist of broken bits, canes that had some kind of inclusion or scratches, Twistie bits, etc. Therefore, some pieces are real gems that are perfect and just need snipped away from the pinched end, but there will also be some not so pretty pieces that you’ll need to get creative with. I’ve seen some amazing ideas come from a bag of Bits and Butts! 😜

What do you do with scraps?
Most inner designs of murrini scrap are perfect for projects and you use them just like regular murrini. But if you are not loving the design, they can be snipped into chips and fused into beautiful dots, flattened into discs, fused in molds, used to create pattern bars, pot melts, or embellishments in a mosaic piece. You can also fuse the murrini on its side, utilizing the OUTER portion of the cane to make very interesting design elements. The canes have been annealed, so you can put them in a torch to make gorgeous stringer, torch-worked designs, and so much more! Every bit of the glass can be used in some way!

Sometimes scrap requires thinking outside the box, which our glass friend Linda Buck is an expert at. She was kind enough to share some of her projects with us to show how creative she gets with scrap! Check these out!!!

Scrap Tiny Trees are the garland under her candles. Scrap Santas make up the wreath on the door! Scrap flowers make the top wreath.

Seconds leaves make up the little wings of this chick.

Scrap pieces were used to create this fish mosaic!

Scrap leaves embellish this adorable Tiki.

Scrap Peacock Feathers made spectacular flowers (who would have guessed??).

Pinched ends were tack fused to make the noses on her plant stakes. Genius.

Seconds and scrap are used throughout this piece. The top wreath is made from end Pinecone pieces, seconds leaves are the base of the candle. Partial Snowflakes look beautiful and the wreath on the door are snips of a Twistie cane.

Seconds leaves and flowers make up a lot of this beauty.

The feathers on this cute chick are scrap Candy Corn.

A scrap Candy Corn is also seen here as a turkey nose!

Scrap and seconds lemons, roses and leaves can be found in the adorable heart.

Santa, the Christmas Tree, Christmas Lights and the green wreath are all seconds and scrap pieces.

Scrap Teardrops are used as the outer dots of this adorable turkey!

My personal favorite…the border of her turtle is made from scrap Pinecones. WOW. Thank you, Linda, for sharing your amazing creativity with us. ❤️ You are a true inspiration!

Don’t forget you can always flatten a 2” cane and use the outer design as a “fabric” look for snowman scarves and other fun patchwork quilt type projects. Try taking an unidentifiable murrini and group it together to see if it makes a spectacular flower or place it on a light table and see what it looks like lit from behind, which might spark an idea or two.

Here is a past photo of some stringer I pulled from scrap with a Hot Head torch on a little propane tank.

If you get some Twisties in your Scrap Bag, they are very cool fully fused into puddles you can add to your creations.

It’s always nice to add to your stash of DOTS that can be used as centers for your Flat-End Daisy Petals, as Willie Worms, in mosaic pieces, grouped to make flowers and so much more!

I hope this helped to get your creativity and imagination fired up so you can hop in and start having fun with your scrap murrini!

HINTS ON THE HORIZON

I have some exciting news! I’m currently in the process of moving my glass studio to one we have had built next to our home. This will be much more convenient for me and the best part is it has a big wall of windows! I can’t wait to work in this beautiful space filled with natural light. Also…I’ve gone SOLAR!! Yep, one entire side of my roof is covered in panels and we now root for sunny days! 🤣 I’m hoping to get fully moved during the first few weeks of December, pending any hiccups, as the contractor hasn’t quite finished up yet.

My website’s online store will close at 10pm on Black Friday. I will open my store back up January 1, 2025 and I will have NEW murrini on Saturday, January 18. Next year I will continue to have new murrini in my online store on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month. This change worked out really well for all of us and I received lots of positive feedback, which I appreciated. Also, as you know, my philosophy is “family before murrini”. This means a possible unexpected closure may pop up here and there, but I’ll be sure to communicate any closures with you via Facebook and email.

Finally, thank you from the bottom of my heart for making 2024 so very blessed. The new website has worked out wonderfully. I love the flexibility of a website platform which allows me to blog details of upcoming murrini, the TIPS and FAQ section to help answer questions, and it also gives me a chance to teach again (even if just online) by sharing my project ideas and process/steps with you. It’s truly been a great year.

I absolutely love what I do and am honored to be a tiny part of your artwork. Wishing you, my glass family, a beautiful holiday season filled with peace, love, and joy!

Hugs,
Beth
